On 26 August the Financial Times reported that Croydon Council has approached the department for additional financial support and that other councils could follow.

An MHCLG spokesperson said:
While councils are responsible for managing their finances, we are working with the council to understand the range of financial issues they are experiencing.
Croydon Council has been allocated over £23.5 million in un-ringfenced Covid-19 funding. In addition, the council’s core spending power saw an increase of nearly £20.8 million this financial year even before additional emergency funding was announced.
