Birmingham bin dispute update

Posted by: , Posted on: - Categories: Local government

Following the ongoing strike by refuse workers at Birmingham City Council, today (14th April), Unite members voted against the Council’s updated offer meaning the strike will continue.

In response to the ballot result, Minister of State for Local Government and English Devolution, Jim McMahon OBE said:

“I know this will be deeply disappointing for Birmingham residents who have already endured weeks of disruption.

“The huge effort to clear the backlog has already seen over 11,000 tonnes of waste collected, and will now continue at pace to protect public health while the dispute remains ongoing.

“There is a fair and reasonable offer on the table and I would urge Unite to end the strikes and return to talks to reach the resolution that is fair to the workers and residents of the city.”

The residents of Birmingham remain the government’s first and foremost priority and the Department has been providing support for Council throughout recent weeks.
