More Awaab’s Law protections: “tenants’ health and safety can never be compromised”

Posted by: , Posted on: - Categories: Social housing

MHCLG's announcement that Awaab’s Law is being extended to seven dangerous hazards later this year has been covered in national, regional and trade press.

The Express (online) reports the news that 4 million social housing tenants will get new legal rights later this year, under strict new rules to make homes safer. It lists the extended hazards that landlords will need to repair very quickly if they are dangerous or pose an immediate danger, such as structural problems, electrical faults, fire risks and excess cold and heat.

ITV News Granada (online) and Birmingham Live similarly explains the new rights for tenants coming on 30 November, reminding the changes are named after two-year-old Awaab Ishak who died after prolonged exposure to damp and mould in Rochdale home in Greater Manchester (in 2020).

The Independent (p8) runs copy from PA highlighting that excess heat is one of the seven new hazards to be fixed to firm timeframes under Awaab’s law later this year. It explains the government’s guidance will help landlords assess ‘threats to health arising from excessively high indoor air temperatures’, with examples on what scenarios might need quick fixes.

There is also positive reporting in Local Government Lawyer, Inside Housing, Housing Digital, Planning, Building and Construction Today and Healthcare Management Magazine.

All articles quote the Housing Secretary Steve Reed saying:

“Awaab’s Law sends a clear message that tenants’ health and safety can never be compromised.

“This action will mean dangers have to be dealt with quickly by law, protecting tenants’ rights to a safe and decent home.”

Welcoming quotes also feature from the Chief Executive of the Chartered Institute of Housing, Gavin Smart and Chief Executive of the National Housing Federation, Kate Henderson.
