On Thursday 4 June, Communities Secretary Steve Reed joined the Prime Minister for a visit to York Central, a major development site in the heart of the city that is set to become one of the largest city centre regeneration projects in the country.

Together, they toured the site and talked through the opportunities it presents including more affordable homes and better transport connections aimed at improving the community.

There has been coverage of this in the York Press and BBC North Yorkshire as well as on BBC News, BBC Radio Leeds, Look North and Times Radio, with coverage leading on housebuilding, affordable housing, and increased funding for the National Railway Museum, a local cultural institution.

After the tour, the Prime Minister and Communities Secretary were joined in York by mayors from across England for a Mayoral Council meeting focused on making the most of devolution.

This follows on from a broader shift underway across the country, moving power out of Westminster and into the hands of local leaders, with the first ever Right to Request process allowing mayors to request new devolved powers to help drive growth in their areas.

This includes:

  • Greater Manchester piloting a new regional approach to youth justice, focused on catching problems early and stopping young people from entering the justice system in the first place.
  • Liverpool City Region working more closely with government to harness the power of technology and data in public services.
  • The North East working with Arts Council England to strengthen alignment between national and local investment in culture.
  • South Yorkshire teaming up with DEFRA and the Environment Agency to launch a new pilot scheme focused on flood resilience and water management that will help protect thousands of homes and communities from flooding.
  • The West Midlands working with government to explore new ideas for improving outcomes for young children, including support for those with special educational needs.

There has been coverage of this in Politico PM Playbook and the Local Government Chronicle, as well as on LBC Radio.

The Communities Secretary then headed to Scarborough to visit projects that have received funding through the landmark Pride in Place programme, including the Brunswick Centre, the Stephen Joseph Theatre, and the Turning Tides project. The local area has been awarded £20 million in government funding to help drive regeneration and make a real difference to people's everyday lives.
